Thankful

I think this is Columbus Day weekend for all the USA-ers, but on the north side of the border, it's Thanksgiving for us Canadians!!

YEAH! Turkey reigns supreme :D

Y'know, Thanksgiving is like the perfect time of year.

Not only is October my favourite month due to the fresh, cold air, the heaps of crisp maple leaves on the ground, the warm sunshine, and the fact that I own an unhealthy number of scarves and hats (yes, not only baseball caps... I've got many other hats & toques as well).

This year is seems an especially perfect time.

'Cause, y'know honestly, it's been a rough year for me. Too many 'ends' and not enough 'beginnings'.

BUT, like my meandering post about asking questions... Thanksgiving is a great time to take a step back and reflect.

Sure, I could focus on the bad things, but why would I want to? I have so many amazing things to be thankful for, to be happy about, to look forward to.

The past isn't malleable. The future can be planned for, but not controlled.

The moment we're living in, that's in our hands.

Yeah, we can't change the weather, or make sure on our drive into work we hit only green lights instead of red, but our attitude is fully ours to command.

I know several people who find autumn depressing with all the plants dying off, the blue sky bundling up in layers of grey clouds, and the daylight hours dwindling.

The change is what energizes me. Being aware of the seasons makes you aware that nothing stays the same. Cycles, ebbs and flows, even stories have their own spikes and gullies.

I love autumn because it reminds me that spring will come again.

That nothing is better after a hard run like flopping on the grass and letting your heart and breathing slow.

I'm glad that Canadian Thanksgiving is at the beginning of October, because autumn is still new and ripe with possibilities, not short-term ones, but the far-off ones that force you to lift your head and know that today is not forever :)

It's easier to be thankful now than in November when the sleeting rain and muggy-grey sky blots out any hint of blue. That's when it feels like you're stuck in eternal-pause in the dark and the cold.

So, here's a shout out to all my readers, followers, writing buddies, CP's, and anyone else that wandered by and felt compelled to scroll to the end of this post.

THANK YOU

Your comments and your friendship gives me joy.

...now I'm going to shove Eva & Berkeley into my car, drive out to my sister's house, and fill my stomach with turkey!

Oh yeah, and the Seahawks are playing today!

EDIT: And I'm also thankful that they won! GO HAWKS!

  1. Heading to parents in ~1 hour myself; we have somewhere around 12 people eating this year as my mom likes to add people with mo one else to eat turkey with; I offered to add some random person I met on the street but was told no. Sadly, I am more thankful we have it in October because of nano :)

  2. October and November are definitely the best months. I'm not much of a spring person other than for the temperature.

    1. I like spring because everything starts growing again, but autumn is (by far) my favourite time of year :)

  3. Ahhh I got so confused on Twitter yesterday because everyone was saying "Happy Thanksgiving" and I was all ??? because I'm a clueless 'Merkan. ;) Happy Thanksgiving to you!!! Hope it was everything relaxing and lovely. And I agree, we have so many things to be thankful for that we should try to focus on only them.

    1. Haha, your "clueless 'Merkan-ness" is forgiven ;)

Besides, I don't know the holidays for most other countries either...

Type me out a line of Shakespeare or a line of nonsense. Dumb-blonde-jokes & Irish jokes will make me laugh myself silly :)
